Bernard Broe born circa 1837 in County Wicklow, son of Michael Broe and Brigid Farrington. He was
a stone cutter living at Milltown when he married Elizabeth Waldron at Rathmines on 20 Oct 1861.
Bernard was a member of the Home Government Association in 1871 and represented the Stone
cutters on various labour issues. He was involved in the Irish Artisans Exhibition and frequently
chaired the meetings. He laid the foundation stone for the exhibition building in 1885 and was
presented with the trowel by the Lord Mayor. He was involved in the building of the Science and Art
Museum but downed tools and took part in a march through the Phoenix Park in 1866 in protest of the
lowered wages offered by the contractors. Elizabeth died on 23 Dec 1876 at 2 Cheaters Row aged 37.

married Elizabeth Hughes, 3rd daughter of Michael Hughes of 149 Great Brunswick Street on
25 Feb 1892 at St Andrews Westland Row.

4 Bridget Elizabeth Broe born 8 Dec 1867 at 8 Camden Buildings baptized at Harrington Street.
5 Anna Broe born at New Street baptized at Harrington Street 31 May 1870 moved to Hove in
Sussex, England and ran a boarding house. She was a spinster in 1939.
6 Isabella Broe born in 1872 at Cheaters Lane baptized at St Andrews, it is thought she moved
to Sussex.
7 Bernard Broe born 10 Jul 1875 at Cheaters Lane baptized at SS Michael & John’s was a stone
cutter and married Catherine Gill, daughter of Thomas Gill a labourer from Stillorgan at Holy
Cross Church, Dundrum on 2 Apr 1898. The both gave their address as 4 Grove Villas (?). They
lived at 4 Grove View from 1898 to 1908. In 1906 Bernard worked on St Eunan’s College in
Letterkenny and is thought to be responsible for the grand entrance. In 1905 he worked on
Ballaghaderreen Cathedral and was responsible for the carving on the tower and spire.
Bernard died 6 Jul 1918 at Oakfield Place, SCR and Catherine died at 16 Oakfield place 14 Mar 1920 and
both are buried in Deansgrange.
1 Bernard Thomas (Leo) Broe born 7 Apr 1899 at Stillorgan followed in his father’s
footsteps and was a stone carver. He was living at 16 Oakfield place when he was
arrested and imprisoned in Mountjoy in for taking part in military exercises and when he
married Bridget O’Neill at Lower Gloucester Street on 15 Feb 1920. Bridget was a clerk and
daughter of Thomas O’Neill of 43 Lower Buckingham Street. Leo was a member of the Irish
Volunteers and thought to be a personal friend of Countess Markievicz. He was president
of the Institute of Scupltors from 1955 to 1957 and founder of the firm Leo Broe and Sons,
ecclesiastical stone carvers based at 94 Harold’s Cross Road (advertising from 1946). He
also sculpted the IRA memorial Statue at Cavan Court House in 1950 and helped with the
restoration of St Bridget's Holy Well at Clondalkin. Leo also designed and sculpted the
plaque outside number 27 Pearse street. This plaque bearing the profiles of Patrick and
Willie Pearse was unveiled by the Taoiseach in 1952. His bust of Countess Markievicz was
exhibited at City Hall as part of the An Tostal celebrations of 1953 and was later installed in
Leinster House. Bridget died at St Laurence’s Hospital, late of Lower Kimmage Road on
23 Nov 1962 aged 57. Leo died 9 Apr 1965 at 30 Lower Kimmage Road. Both were buried
at Deansgrange. (The grave has a rather beautiful headstone.)
Their son Desmond was also a sculptor and won the RDS Taylor Art Scolarship in 1943. He is
responsible for the statue dedicated to St Bridget on the Curragh Camp/Kildare Road
erected in 1955 to commemorate the 300 Kildare men massacred in 1798. Desmond died at
8 Belgrave Road, Rathmines 16 Sep 1968 aged 47 and is buried with his parents. Their
daughter Irene also became a sculptor, her bust of Arland Ussher (mayor) can be seen at the
National Gallery of Ireland.
2 Gertrude Elizabeth Broe born 11 Aug 1900 at Stillorgan became a nun and died in Scotland
in 1942.
3 Kathleen Mary (Violet) Broe born 29 Apr 1902 at Stillorgan moved to England and worked for
her aunt Anne at a boarding house in Hove.
4 John Joseph (Jack) Broe born 24 Oct 1903 at Stillorgan.
5 Ernest Christopher Broe born 18 Dec 1905 at Stillorgan emigrated to England and died in
Birmingham.
6 Margaret Mary Broe (twin) born 22 Jun 1907 at Stillorgan died 19 Mar 1908 at Grove View
and was buried at Deansgrange.
7 Ellen Veronica Broe (twin) born 22 Jun 1907 at Stillorgan died 30 Sep aged 3 months at 4
Grove view and was buried at Deansgrange.
8 Mary Broe born 7 Aug 1908 at Stillorgan died 8 Sep 1908 and was buried at Deansgrange.
9 Eileen P Broe born 23 Sep 1909 Lower Grattan Hill, Cork moved to England and worked for
her aunt Anne at a boarding house in Hove.

buried at Deansgrange.
Bernard was living at Cheaters Row when he secondly married Margaret Farrington, daughter of Richard
Farrington & Bridget Norton of Ballyknocken Co Wicklow at Blackditches (Valleymount) on 24 Jul 1877.
Margaret died on 12 May 1907 at 28 Clarence Place and was buried at Glasnevin.
