Abraham William Briscoe born circa 1860 in Paplan, Kovensko, Russia son of Moses and Rachel
Briscoe. He was living on the SCR and was naturalised in 1889. He married Ida Jöedicke circa
1890. He was a draper in 1891 and by 1897 he was trading as Lawlor & Briscoe, house
furnishers and auctioneers. They lived at 35 Lower Ormond Quay from 1897 and they were
living at Leeson Street by 1910. He was a freemason and a governor of the Masonic Boys’ &
Girls’ Schools. Abraham died 24 Nov 1917 at 83 Ranelagh Road, Dublin. Ida died 1 Jun 1930 at
Munich. Her body was repatriated and she is buried at Dolphin’s barn.
1 Rachel Briscoe 15 Feb 1891 at 19 Mount Pleasant Square. She married Benjamin
Briscoe on 29 Jun 1910 at Adelaide Road Synagogue. Benjamin was a merchant Tailor
and the youngest son of Maurice Isaacs of the Elms, Craigmiller Park, Edinburgh.
2 Arthur Joseph Briscoe born circa 1893 in Germany, a medical Student in 1911. He
emigrated to the United States and died 1 Nov 1952.
3 Robert Briscoe second son born 25 Sep 1894 at 21 Lower Beechwood Avenue. He was
active with the Irish Republican Army and Sinn Féin during the Irish War of
Independence. According to himself he was a gun runner using the alias, Captain Swift.
He married Lilian Melanie (Lily) Isaacs on 30 April 1919 at Adelaide Road Synagogue.
Lily was the daughter of Joseph Isaacs, JP, TC and President of the Dublin Hebrew
Congregation. They had seven children including Ben, Fianna Fáil politician who served
as a TD from 1965 to 2002 and was Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1988/9. Robert was in New
York in 1922 and was one of a party of seven which tried to take over the Free State
Consulate office, claiming that it was established with Republican money, that they were
republican soldiers and were under orders from De Valera. They lived at Balure, Church
Road, Ballybrack from 1931 to 1936. He was a founding director of the Viennese Knitted
Goods Co in1932, Wicklow Mines Ltd in 1936 and Irish Non-Ferrous Metal Company Ltd
in 1941. Their house was raided by Gardai and detectives in 1936 and that year they moved
to Somerset in Stradbrook. By 1948 they were living at Herbert Place, Ballsbridge. He
served as a TD from 1927 to 1965. He also served as Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1956/7 and
again in 1961/2. In 1957 he travelled with his wife and son to Canada and the US, as Lord
Mayor and received a warm welcome. While there he publicised that being a Jew did not
prevent you from being a patriot to your country. He appealed to both the Democrat and
Republican senators to support action to end partition in Ireland. He also spoke at events
organised by the United Jewish Appeal which was raising funds to aid immigrants to Israel.
He published his autobiography ‘For the Life of Me' co-authored with Aldan Hatch in 1958.
He died 29 May 1969 at Clonskeagh and following an Orthodox Jewish funeral, he was
buried at Dolphins Barn Jewish Cemetery in Dublin.
1 Frances Joan (Joan) Briscoe born 11 Jul 1920 at 19 Leinster Square Rathmines. She
graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons. She was a medical doctor and moved
to Newfoundland in 1947. She married Hugh O’Reilly, a radiologist at St Michael’s
Hospital, Toronto.

Leeson Park. He joined the Irish Air Corps during The Emergency and then worked as
a pilot for Aer Lingus. He was working for KLM from 1948 and flew his father and
mother home from their 1957 Mayor trip to the US, and flew his father from
Amsterdam to New York for his mayoral trip in 1961.
4 Herbert David Briscoe born 21 Aug 1896 at 21 Lower Beechwood Avenue. He was
living in New York in 1918. He married Josephine Fleischer nee Bechert.
5 Wolfe Tone Briscoe born 4 February 1900 at 35 Lower Ormond Quay. He was in the
United States in 1918. He married Elizabeth M Bloch in 1925 in London. He was living
at Foxrock and set up the Clonskea Cotton Company in 1942.
6 Judith Briscoe born 14 Apr 1901 at 35 Lower Ormond Quay married Maurice W
Goldblatt in London in 1925.
7 Henrietta Leah Briscoe born 11 Oct 1904 at 35 Lower Ormond Quay never married.
