Erasmus Dixon Borrowes born 21 Sep 1799 in Queen's County. He was the fourth son of Sir
Erasmus Dixon Borrowes, 6th Baronet of Gilltown and Henrietta de Robillard Champagne.
His mother was the youngest daughter of Arthur Champagne, the Dean of Clonmacnoise. He
graduated Trinity College, took Holy orders and married Harriet Hamilton in March 1825.
Harriet was the fourth daughter of Hans Hamilton of Ballymacoll, Co Meath. He became
the 8th Bart on the death of his brother Sir Walter Dixon Borrowes who died without issue
on 7 Mar 1834. In later years he became an accomplished genealogist and antiquary. He
died 27 May 1866 at age 66 in Lauragh, County Laois. He is buried at St John's, Coolbanagher.
He left 3k to his wife and 2k to his son Walter. He also left 4k to his nephew Thomas Robert
Stannus of Co Antrim.
1 Henrietta Mary Borrowes married Henry Meade Hamilton 12th Foot at Clifton,
Gloucester on 5 Jun 1845. Henry was a lieutenant in the 47th Regiment and the eldest
son of John Hamilton of the Grove Co Meath.
2 Adelaide Charlotte Marianne Borrowes second daughter married Edward Tipping on
6 Nov 1850 at Coolbanagher Church. Edward of Bellurgan Park, Co Meath was the son
of Edward Tipping.
3 Kildare Borrowes died February 1837.
4 Erasmus Dixon Borrowes born April 1831 was a captain in the army. He married
Frederica Esten Hutchinson on 14 Oct 1851 at Halifax, Nova Scotia. Frederica was the
eldest daughter of Colonel George Hutchinson of the 97th Regiment. Erasmus served
in the Burmese war and the Indian mutiny. He became the 9th Bart on the death of
his father in 1866. Frederica died 17 Aug 1886 at Barretstown Castle, Co Kildare.
1 Kildare Borrowes eldest son born 21 Sep 1852 at Northernhay, Exeter. He served
with the 11th Hussars and was ADC to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He played
cricket for Middlesex. He married Julia Aline Holden in 1886. He became the 10th
Baronet on the death of his father. He died in 1924.
2 Clara Ellen Borrowes born 1855 at Portsea Island. She married Duncan Matheson
in 1875 and died in 1931.
3 Flora Borrowes born 10 Jul 1859 in India. She married Rev Arthur J Johnston in
1898.
4 Eustace Dixon Borrowes born 31 Dec 1866. He first wife was Louisa Margaret
Winifred Mary Royse who he married in Dublin in 1899. Their only son Kildare
Henry Borrowes was killed at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 aged 16. He became
11th Baronet on the death of his brother Kildare in 1924. On his death in 1939
the Baronetcy became extinct.
Erasmus secondly married Florence Elizabeth Ruxton on 5 Oct 1887 at St Paul’s Church
in Ardee. Florence was the daughter of William Ruxton, JP. Erasmus died on 8 Feb 1898
returning from a days hunting. Barretstown House was sold in 1918. Florence died in
Devon on 1 Dec 1935.
5 Mary Adelaide Vernon Borrowes married Montague Martindale Parry-Jones in 1913
at Naas.
6 Walter Borrowes, youngest son born 1892 in Tenby joined the Royal Navy. He was
killed on active service onboard a submarine in 1915.
5 Walter Joseph Borrowes born circa 1835 was agent to Lord Portarlington and with the
4th Battalion Leinster Regiment. He was promoted from captain to major in 1875. He
was a colonel by 1881 and a JP. He was living at Bornere, Portarlington and married
Florence Mary Aylmer on 21 Mar 1882 at St Ann’s Church, Dublin. Florence was the
daughter of Michael Aylmer of Courtown, Co Kildare. They lived at Montpelier Manor
from 1887 to 1892. Walter died at Plantation, Monkstown on 11 Sep 1893 and is buried at
St John's, Coolbanagher. He left 2.5k in personal estate.
1 Eleanor Henrietta Borrowes born 1 Sep 1893 at Portarlington.
Florence secondly married William Richard Newenham Gore on 1 Jun 1895 at Bray Parish
Church. William was the son of the late Major Charles William Gore of the 72nd
Highlanders of 14 Clare Street and Courtown, Co Kildare. They lived at Glencairn, Meath
Road, Bray where Florence died on 3 Aug 1907. William died 12 Mar 1933 at Sidmonton
Square, Bray aged 79.
6 Eleanor Caroline Borrowes born circa 1838. She died a spinster on 27 May 1871, her
brother Walter the informant and her executor.
