Thomas Butler born at 5 Stafford Street baptised at the Pro Cathedral a 26 Sep 1853 and
baptised again at St Mary’s Church of Ireland on 18 Dec 1853. He was one of at least ten
children born to John Butler, a tradesman and his wife Margaret Donnelly. Most of his
siblings were also baptised into both faiths. He was a civil servant working at the General
Register Office, living at 3 Wellington Place West and married Anna Booker on 15 Oct 1879
at St Georges Church, Dublin. Anna was living at 164 Great Britain Street and was the
daughter of George Butler, a tradesman. Thomas was a Superintendent of Statistics in the
Department of Agriculture by 1911; they were living at Pembroke Park and seven of their
nine children had survived. Thomas died 17 Jan 1917 at 11 Villiers Road, Rathmines
survived by his widow.
1 George Booker Butler born at 3 Grove Park Rathmines baptised 21 Sep 1883 at
Harold’s Cross Church of Ireland. He worked as a clerk in the Midland Railway
company from 1900 to 1903. He was a clerk in the RCB and married Annie Maud
(Maude) Hamilton at Harolds Cross Church on 19 Apr 1911. Maude was the
daughter of Matthew Hamilton, a commercial traveller and his wife Jane Williams.
They lived at Cherryfield Avenue in Ranelagh and were at 6 Villiers Road in Rathgar by
1926. They had moved to Ivydene on Cowper Road by 1938. George was appointed
secretary of the RCB in 1935 and later Chief Officer and secretary until he retired in
1949. He was a trustee of the Church Missionary Society and a governor of the
Erasmus School. He was a member of the United Services club and a founder member
of the Castle Golf Club in Rathfarnham. He served as Hon Sec and later as chairman of
the Leinster Branch of the Golfing Union of Ireland. Maude died on 16 Feb 1957 aged
71 at a nursing home on Herbert Street, late of Ivydene. George died at Hampstead,
Glasnevin om 2 Mar 1970.
1 Arthur Hamilton Butler, older son born 8 Mar 1912 at 40 Cherryfield Avenue. He
was educated at the High School Dublin and Friar’s School Wales. He graduated
Trinity College and took Holy orders. He was ordained in 1935 and was curate at
Monkstown before being transferred to London. He married Betty Pringle on
14 Jul 1938 at Christ Church, Leeson Park. Betty was a twin (to Peggy) and the
daughter of Seton Sydney Pringle, Surgeon and Ethel McMunn. She was also a
well known tennis and badminton player. Arthur served as a chaplain to the
forces during WWII and was awarded an MBE in 1944 for services at Anzio Beach
Head in Italy. On his return to Ireland, he was appointed rector of Monkstown in
1945. He was appointed Bishop of Tuam, Killala and Achonry in 1958 and Bishop
of Connor in 1969. Betty died in 1976 and Arthur later remarried.
2 Leslie Booker Butler younger son born 15 May 1916 at 11 Foxhall Terrace,
Ranelagh parents resident at 40 Cherryfield Avenue, Rathmines. He started work as
a clerk at the RCB in 1934. On the outbreak of War, he joined the Royal Airforce. He
served as a wireless operator and then as an air gunner and attained the rank of
sergeant. He was on a ferry flight onboard a Vickers Wellington IC with the 15
Operational Training Unit which took off from Harwell, Berkshire on a flight to Malta
via Gibraltar. The aircraft crashed in the sea on final approach to RAF Kalafrana in
Malta on 16 Jun 1941. All six on board were killed but only five bodies recovered.
Leslie is buried at the Malta (Capuccini) Naval Cemetery. After his death his family
donated a cabinet in his memory to St Philips Church in Milltown where the family
attended services.
