Patrick Boland born circa 1791 married Elizabeth circa 1828. He was a successful baker of Capel
Street from circa 1823. With his son Patrick he created what was the largest bakery in Dublin in the
late 19th century. It was known as the Metropolitan Bakery and they produced bread, biscuits,
cakes and flour, although they are probably best remembered now for their cream crackers. They
also opened the Model Bakery at Georges Street, Kingstown. Patrick died 12.12.1871, the
informant his daughter Eliza Hughes. He left 18k in personal estate, probate to Edward T Ennis of
Kimmage Mills. Elizabeth died 23.11.1875 at Watermill, Raheny, the informant daughter Eliza Hughes.
1 Anne Boland baptised 26.04.1829 at the Pro Cathedral, Dublin. Anne married Matthew Joseph
O’Farrell a soap maker and tobacconist of North King Street and Queen Street on 02.07.1850
at St Mary’s Pro Cathedral, Dublin. They lived at Manor House, Dundrum. Matthew died there
on 07.04.1879 aged 66 years and Anne died on 02.02.1898 aged 68 years at Cambridge House,
Dalkey.
2 Elizabeth Boland 2nd daughter married Peter J Hughes of Liverpool eldest son of Bernard
Hughes a merchant of Belfast on 19.01.1853 at the Pro Cathedral, Dublin.
3 Joseph Boland baptised 19.12.1830 at the Pro Cathedral, Dublin.
4 Lucy Josephine Boland baptised 11.06.1834 at the Pro Cathedral, Dublin. Lucy of Watermill
House married Charles J McDermott of Salt Hill on 26.10.1858 at the Pro Cathedral, Dublin.
Charles died on 02.04.1892 at Mountjoy Square and Lucy died on 16.12.1916 at Ranelagh.
5 Gertrude Boland baptised 11.10.1835 at the Pro Cathedral, Dublin. In 1898 it was
estimated that her fortune was in the region of £50,000.
6 Ellen Boland baptised 11.08.1837 at the Pro Cathedral, Dublin.
7 Patrick Boland only son born 20.10.1840 baptised Pro Cathedral. Patrick married Mary Anne
Donnelly daughter of John Donnelly of 26 Arran Quay on 21.11.1868 at the Pro Cathedral,
Dublin. In 1873 Patrick purchased mills at Grand Canal from Thomas Pim and opened another
bakery there. Patrick died intestate on 17.05.1877 aged 36 years at Raheny Park and left 100k
in personal estate. His wife Mary was granted letters of administration. Mary of Winton House,
Leeson Park died of phthisis on 19.04.1882 at Fernside, Killiney and left 43k in personal estate.
Following the death of Mary, her brother Nicholas Donnelly, Bishop of Canea (Crete) became
guardian of the children. In 1888 the Boland's bakery business, which was the largest in Dublin
became a limited liability company with the family retaining a large number of shares. The
company was sold for a quarter of a million in 1893. Google bought the Boland's complex in
2018 for a reported €300 million and it is currently being restored and apartments built on the
site.

2 John Mary Pius Boland 2nd son born 16.09.1870 at 135 Capel Street. John became
an Olympic Champion in tennis for Great Britain and Ireland at the first modern
Olympics, which took place in Athens in 1896. He was a member of the Irish
Parliamentary Party for South Kerry from 1900 to 1918.

5 Anna Teresa Boland 3rd daughter born circa 13.05.1874. Anna of 29 Upper Leeson
Street married Vincent Joseph Kelly of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles son of
John C Kelly of 57 Fitzwilliam Square on 18.02.1897 at the Roman Catholic Chapel,
Donnybrook.
