Anne Blake daughter of Valentine Blake. Luke died 1825 and Anne died 1865. Both are
buried at Kilcolman Old Graveyard, Ballaghaderreen.
1 Thomas Dillon born circa 1803 a general merchant running a wholesale grocery and spirit
shop married Monica Blake. It was a very successful merchant and chartered ships to bring
in timbers and metals, which he auctioned from his warehouses in Knox Street and Arran
Quay in Ballina. Thomas died on 01.11.1854 aged 50 years at Ballina. Monica died
05.12.1888 aged 76 years at 7 Rutland Square. Probate to his son Valentine B Dillon of 7
Rutland Square. Both are buried at Kilcolman Old Graveyard, Ballaghaderreen.
1 Valentine B Dillon born circa 1844 of Cappagh, Kilkenny son of late Thomas
Dillon of Ballina, Mayo married Margaret Josephine Phelan of Alleghany City, USA
second daughter of Richard Phelan on 09.01.1872 at the Roman Catholic Chapel of
St Columba, Ballybrack, Dublin. Witnesses John B Dillon and Nannie Dillon.
Valentine was a solicitor living at Ballybrack and they moved to Rutland Square
circa 1876. He was solicitor to Parnell during the Parnell Commission enquiry into
the Phoenix Park Murders. John was twice Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1894 to
1896. Margaret died 28 Jul 1903 aged 62 at Lismore Killiney. Valentine died a
widower on 31 Mar 1904 aged 57 at Baggot Street late of Dartmouth Square.
Probate granted to his daughter Jane. After his death 7 Rutland Square was put up
for sale.

1 Valentine Dillon born and died on 02.08.1887 only 5 hours old at Strokestown.
Valentine a widower of Strokestown secondly married Josephine Hickey on 17.10.1893
at St Mary’s Church, Haddington Road, Dublin. Josephine was the youngest daughter
of the late John Hickey of Johnstown House, Kildare. Valentine died on 18.06.1897
aged 43 at Strokestown.

Dublin leaving 29K. Probate to John Dillon MP.
3 John Blake Dillon 3rd son born circa 05.05.1814 Ballaghaderreen, Mayo educated at
Maynooth. John a barrister-at-law called to the Irish Bar in 1841. He was a founder of the
Nation newspaper with Thomas Davis and Charles Gavan Duffy. He married Adelaide Hart
daughter of late William Hart of Leinster Street and Gremoyne, Dublin on 11.10.1847 at St
Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church, Westland Row, Dublin. He fled to France after the failure
of the Young Ireland Rebellion in 1848 and retuned to Dublin circa 1855. John was a MP for
Co Tipperary in 1865 and died of cholera on 15.09.1866 aged 52 years at Druid Lodge,
Killiney. Adelaide died on 29.05.1872 aged 44 years at St Columba, Killiney.
1 John Dillon third child born 04.09. 1851 in Blackrock. 04.09.1851 married Elizabeth
Mathew on 21.11.1895 at the Brompton Oratory. Elizabeth was the daughter of Rt
Hon Sir James Charles Mathew. John died on 04.08.1927 aged 75 years.
1 James Mathew Dillon born 26.09.1902 was an Irish Fine Gael politician who
served as leader of the opposition and leader of Fine Gael from 1959 to 1965
and Minister for Agriculture from 1948 to 1951 and 1954 to 1957. He served as
a TD from 1932 to 1969.
4 Valentine Blake Dillon youngest son born circa 1819 at Ballaghaderreen, Mayo. Valentine
was Crown Solicitor for County Sligo. Valentine married Ismay E French only daughter of
Thomas Featherston French and Elizabeth of Aughalustia Lodge, Ballaghaderreen on
24.09.1846 at Ballaghaderreen. Valentine was a sessional crown solicitor for Sligo and
worked in Sligo for 40 years. They lived at Booterstown House from 1863 to 1886. Ismay
died 23.07.1879 aged 51 at Booterstown House. Valentine a crown solicitor died a widower
on 13.07.1907 aged 88 in Sligo.
1 John French Dillon only son baptised 12.07.1847 at St Mary’s, Pro Cathedral. Dublin.
John a solicitor joined his father’s practice circa 1872. John of Booterstown House
married Jane Catherine Rooney on 30.07.1874 at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Chapel in
Dundrum. Catherine was the second daughter William Rooney of Campfield House.
Witnesses Charles French and Alice Rooney. John died on 11.01.1892 aged 43 years
at the Hardwick Hospital late of 4 Zetland Terrace, Clontarf. Jane a widow living with
her siblings James, George and Mary Dillon and cousin Gertrude at 42 Eglington Road
in 1901 and 46 Wellington Road in 1911.
2 Eliza Jane (Ellen) Dillon eldest daughter baptised 10.08.1850 at St Mary’s, Pro Cathedral,
Dublin married Thomas Thompson son of late John Thompson of Deer Park, Antrim on
21.11.1877 at the Parochial Church, Booterstown. Thomas died 13.08.1895 aged 60
years at Arnold Ville, Monkstown and is buried at Glasnevin.

Pauline of Arnold Villa, Monkstown married Wilhelm Logmark an engineer of

5 Mary Juliana Dillon born circa 1825 became a Sister of Mercy in Londonderry in November
1849. Sister Juliana and her fellow nuns helped republican rebels escape by ship from
Derry disguised as women after the failed rebellion of 1848.
