Thomas Hodges born circa 1811 son of Thomas Hodges brass founder, copper and lead
merchant of 28 Sackville Street and later of 99 Middle Abbey Street. His mother died on
27 Feb 1835 at her residence in Lower Abbey Street aged 66. He was of Beresford Place
and married Charlotte Elliott on 12 Mar 1839 at St Thomas’ Church, Dublin. Charlotte was the
youngest daughter of John Elliott of Lower Sackville Street. Thomas was the younger brother
of William Hodges (1801-1871) the Lord Mayor of who tried to close down the Donnybrook
Fair in 1836/7 and was subsequently sued by the booth owners. The foundry firm of Thomas
Hodges produced the bell for St John’s Sandymount in 1850 and recast and hung the bells
as St Canice’s Cathedral in 1853. Their company was taken over by the Dublin Metal Work
Company Ltd in 1864. Charlotte died at Catherine’s Place, Bangor on 12 Apr 1888. Thomas,
a merchant, formerly of Dublin died 27 Oct 1891 at Seafield Terrace, White Abbey, Belfast.

4 William Henry Hodges born 21 Apr 1845 at 14 Marino Crescent to Thomas Hodges,
William took Holy Orders. He was curate at Killoe, Longford and married Mary
Wilson on 8 Dec 1874 at Monkstown Church. Mary was living at Kingstown and was
the elder daughter of the late Richard Wilson, a merchant. Mary died after childbirth
on 18 Jan 1883 at Timahoe aged 33 and was buried at Mount Jerome. William was
rector of Timahoe, Queens County (Co Laois).

living with his father and step mother in 1901. Thomas was a bank clerk and
married Jeannie Maitland on 26 Mar 1913 at Holy Trinity Church, Bolton on
Sands. Jeannie was the daughter of the late William Maitland, a tea planter.
Jeannie died 7 Feb 1914 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Vera Charlotte Hodges born 1 Jan 1914 at Ballsbridge. She was
educated at the Rutland High School. She was a school teacher and a
member of the INTO. She lived at Ailesbury gardens and had a black and
white dog called Felix. She was co-opted on to the board of the Irish
National Adult Education Association in 1973.
Thomas secondly married Norah Margaret Senior on 10 Apr 1917 at St Canice’s
Cathedral. Norah was the daughter of Benjamin Senior, chancellor of St
Canice’s. Thomas was manager of the Hibernian Bank in Loughrea and retired
in 1939. Nora died 5 Sep 1941 at St John's Road, Sandymount and was buried at
Mount Jerome. Thomas died 12 Nov 1957 at Glensilva Nursing Home, late of
Ailesbury Gardens.

death notice. He was buried at Mount Jerome in the family vault.

and step mother in 1901. She married Samuel George Forsythe on 10 Aug 1904
at Clontarf Parish Church. Samuel was a civil servant, chief superintendent of the
Dublin Postal Services and the son of George Forsythe, a civil servant.

step mother in 1901. He was a bank clerk and died unmarried on 12 Nov 1906 at
Charlemont Street Private Hospital late of Seafield Road, Clontarf.
6 Muriel Mary Hodges born 12 Jan 1883 at Timahoe living with her father and step
mother in 1901. She married Thomas Wright on 2 April 1907 at Clontarf Parish
Church. Thomas was a bank clerk and the son of Thomas Wright, an auctioneer.
William secondly married Elizabeth Charlotte Edge on 8 Oct 1885 at Mayo Church, Killaban.
Elizabeth was the daughter of William Edge of Towlerton House, Queens County. The family
lived at Clontarf from 1901 when William retired. William died at The Rectory, Rathmines
his son Evelyn the informant. Elizabeth died in May 1936 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
7 George Henry Bertram Hodges born 9 Jul 1885 at Timahoe, Queens County and
was working for the Bank of Ireland in 1911. He served with the Royal Army
Service Corps during WW1 and married Vera Margharita Eliza Hocknell on
17 Sep 1920 at St Michael & All Angels Church, Blackburn. Vera was the daughter
of Henry Arthur Hocknell, an engineer.
8 Evelyn Charles (Darby) Hodges born 8 Aug 1887 at Towlerton, Queens County
educated t the Mountjoy School in Clontarf. He graduated Trinity College with
the large gold medal in logics and ethics. He was ordained in 1911 for the curacy
of Drumcondra. He was appointed organising secretary of the Dublin Diocesan
Board of Education in 1917. He was living at The Rectory, Belgrave Square,
Rathmines and married Violet Blanche (Blanche) Crawford on 27 Dec 1927 at
Holy Trinity Church Rathmines. Violet was living at 48 Palmerston Road and
was the daughter of Rev George Hill Crawford. He was principal of the Church
of Ireland Training College from 1928 to 1942. He was elected and consecrated
Bishop of Limerick in February 1943 at Christ Church Cathedral Dublin. He
attended The Lambeth Conference in 1958. He retired in 1960 and in 1963
published a biography of the Rt Rev Ernest Lewis Crosby ‘A valiant life 1864–1961.
Blanche died on 23 Feb 1966 at Stillorgan Park. Her son the informant. Her
funeral service was held at St Brigid’s and she was buried in the adjoining
graveyard. Evelyn died in an Edinburgh Hospital on 18 Mar 1980. He was buried
at St Brigid’s graveyard.
1 Deirdre Elizabeth Jane Hodges only daughter died 6 Apr 1950 after a
long illness at Palmerston House and was buried at St Brigid’s graveyard.
2 Desmond Hodges was born in Dublin, the son of the Bishop of Limerick and
attended St Columba's, Rathfarnham. He attended Trinity College he left to
become an apprentice with an architectural firm that specialised in the
restoration of 18th century buildings. He qualified as a member of the Royal
Institute of Architects of Ireland and practised in Belfast before applying for
a job in Edinburgh. 'He moved to Edinburgh in the 1970s. He was director of
the Edinburgh New Town Conservation Committee (ENTCC), the body that
revitalised and refurbished some of the grandest squares in the capital's New
Town. He worked with architect Sir Robert Matthew, and ‘saved the New Town
from further decay and brought new life to areas such as Stockbridge, many of
which were in a sorry state both socially and architecturally’. (OBIT)

resident at Sandycove and married Francis Russell Rutledge on 6 Apr 1920 at Christ
Church, Kingstown. Francis was an auctioneer living at Victoria Place, Galway and the
son of Campbell Rutledge, a bank manager.
