Charles Benson born circa 1797 son of Charles Benson, a land agent of Collooney and Elizabeth
Gray. He was educated at Mr WC Armstrong's school. He was an MD of 34 York Street. He
secondly married Maria Andrews in October 1833 at Templebarry Church and they had at least
eight children. Maria was the fifth daughter of Maunsell Andrews, JP of Ratheny, House King’s
County. He was one time president of the Royal College of Surgeons and died 21 Jan 1880 at 42
Fitzwilliam Square and was buried at Mount Jerome. Maria died same place on 24 Dec 1887 and
was buried with her husband.
1 Charles Maunsell Benson eldest son baptised at St Peter’s Church on 20 Nov 1840 took
Holy orders. He was appointed to curacy of Carrigaline, Cork in 1863 before being
transferred to Birmingham in 1868. He was appointed incumbent of Lucan in October
1871 and married Belinda Jane Delmelge at St Peter’s Church, Dublin on 29 Nov 1871.
Belinda was the fourth daughter of Julius Delmage and Belinda Leake. The service was
performed by her uncle the Rev John Delmege, rector of Youghalarra. They were living
in Lucan in 1901 and 1911 and had no children. He died 14 Jun 1917 at 5 Eden Park,
Kingstown. He left 16k in personal estate and probate was to his nephew Charles
Molyneux Benson. Belinda died the 30 Mar 1937 and both are buried at Mount Jerome.
2 Mary Kate Benson baptised 30 May 1842 at St Peter’s was an Irish artist and studied in
England under Herkomer and Calderon and in Paris under Lazare. She exhibited at the
RHA and died unmarried on 21 Mar 1921 at ‘Eskeragh’, Sutton.
3 John Hawtrey Benson baptised 15 May 1843 at St Peter’s graduated Trinity in 1864. He
was MD, FRCPI and married Dorothea Araminta Downing Power on 16 Jun 1871 at Kill
Parish Church. Dorothea was the daughter of the Rev Thomas Power. John was medical
advisor for Ireland to the Colonial office for 46 years and was knighted in 1912. Dame
Dorothea died 19 Aug 1923 aged 76 and was buried at Mount Jerome. John a former
President of the Royal College of Surgeon died on 9 Dec 1931 and was buried with his wife.
They had no children.
4 Charlotte Elizabeth Benson baptised 19 Jun 1846 at St Peter’s Church. She was a painter
and exhibited at the RHA. She died unmarried in 2 Mar 1893 at 42 Fitzwilliam Square and
was buried at Munt Jerome.
5 George Vere Benson baptised at St Peter’s Church on 6 Jan 1848 was a practicing barrister.
He married Mary Thornton on 4 Aug 1880 at St Mary’s, Wimbledon. Mary was the eldest
daughter of D B Thornton of Surrey, late of St Petersburg and had been born in New
Zealand. Vere was coroner for the Lewes District of East Sussex from and died 21 Feb 1929.
Mary was a governor of the Lewes Victoria Hospital. She died at Lewes in August 1939.

RAMC.
6 Sarah Ismena Benson youngest daughter born circa 8 Oct 1848 at 34 York Street baptised at
St Peter’s married William Cotton Rohde on 2 Apr 1879 at St Stephen’s Church, Ootacamund,
Madras, India. William was the son of John Cotton late of the Madras Civil Service. They lived
at Croydon, Surrey in 1901 and had four children. William died 10 Mar 1908 at Ashgrove,
Dundrum and Sarah was still living at Ashgrove, Dundrum in 1913. Sarah died 14 Aug 1930
at 9 Waterloo Place.
7 Ralph Sillery Benson fourth son born 21 Aug 1851 at 34 York Street, Dublin baptised
at St Peter’s. He was educated at Rathmines and Trintiy College Dublin and took the
Indian Civil service exams in 1871. He married Fanny Catherine Alice Gilberte Cooper
at St Thomas’ Madras, India on 28 Dec 1876. Fanny was the second daughter of William
Wrighte Gilberte Cooper. He was called to the Bar, Middle Temple in 1887. He was
undersecretary to the Madras government in India, chief justice of the province, and
later vice-chancellor of Madras University. He was Puisne Judge of the High Court from
1896 to 1916. He was knighted in 1906 and Alice was awarded The Kaisar-i-Hind medal
for public service in 1913. Ralph retired after 40 years of service with the Indian Civil
Service in 1913 and they moved to Roebuck Grove in Donnybrook. He died on
19 Oct 1920 at Roebuck Grove, Donnybrook. Probate to his wife and son Ralph. He left
15k in personal estate.
1 Ralph Hawtrey Rodhe Benson second son born 30 Jan 1880. He joined the
Royal Artillery and attained the rank of Brigadier. He was awarded the CBE. He
was commandant of the Military college of Science in Woolwich from 1932 to
1932 and was ADC to the King for the same period. He was appointed a deputy
controller of salvage in 1939. He died unmarried on 19 Apr 1943 at Maidenhead
and is remembered on the family headstone in Mount Jerome.
2 Cecily Kate Benson only daughter born 26 Nov 1881 died unmarried on
15 Sep 1917 and was buried at Mount Jerome. Probate to her father.
3 Charles Molyneux Benson elder son born 2 Oct 1877. He was admitted to the
medical profession in 1902 and in 1906 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal
College of Surgeons and became secretary of the council of the college. He
married Alice Josephine (Josépha) French on 17 Mar 1904 at St Bartholomew’s
Church, Dublin. Charled died on 16 Feb 1919 late of 72 Lower Baggot Street,
Dublin. Alice died 17 Jan 1956 aged 76 at Riversdale Donnybrook. Both are buried
at Mount Jerome.
1 Elizabeth Catherine Benson born circa 1908 married and died 15 Mar 1963.
2 John Charles Hawtrey Benson, youngest son born circa 1919 died 7 Mar 1975.
8 Arthur Henry Benson fifth son born circa 1852 educated Trinity College. He was licenced
in 1874 and later a fellow of the RCSI. He was a founder of the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear
Hospital, Dublin. He married Ethel Martha Rawson on the 15 Mar 1898 at St Stephen’s
Church, Dublin. Ethel was the daughter of Richard Rawson, solicitor of Shean Lodge,
Ballycroy, Co Mayo and she was 25 years his junior. He was an ophthalmic surgeon to the
City of Dublin Hospital and wrote a number of articles on eye disease. He died on
6 Nov 1912 at Roebuck Grove, the residence of his brother Ralph, late of 42 Fitzwilliam
Place. He was buried at Mount Jerome. Ethel (known as Bennie to her friends) died
20 May 1957 at Kensington aged 76. Her ashes were scattered in London and she is
remembered on the family headstone at Mount Jerome. They had no children.
