George Dickson born circa 1782. He was a wine merchant of 71 Aungier Street (successor to
James Atkinson) married Charlotte Clarke in 1805. Charlotte was the daughter of Benjamin
Clarke. (Her sister Sara Lucinda was married to Joseph Devonshire Jackson). They left Aungier
Street in 1813. It is thought that they were in Liverpool from 1822 to 1831 and George may
have been insolvent. They were living at Columbus, Muscogee, Georgia in 1850 and George
appears to be the owner of slaves. Charlotte was living with her daughter Jane at the
Columbus estate worth $5k in 1860.
1 Benjamin Dickson third son born circa 1819 in Dublin. He graduated Trinity, admitted
Kings Inns and then took Holy orders. He was senior moderator in mathematics in 1842
and elected a fellow of TCD 1848 and resigned in 1880. He also acted as an assistant
librarian at Trinity. He was living at 36 Trinity College and married Margaret Frances
Hassard on 14 Apr 1856 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. Margaret living at 67 Lower Mount
Street was the widow of Francis Charles Hassard of Spring Farm, Co Wicklow and the
daughter of Richard Hudson. She had two sons by her first marriage. Margaret died
22 Feb 1887 aged 64 at Kildare Place. Benjamin died a widower on 13 Apr 1890 at the
home of his son at 5 Ulster Terrace, Stillorgan Park.
1 Anna Mary Dickson born 6 Feb 1857 at 67 Lower Mount Street died 12 Aug 1857.
2 Benjamin Devonshire Dickson only son born 24 Mar 1858 at Sutton House, Howth
the home of Mrs Jackson. He was a medical doctor and married Marion Stanislaus
Lenihan on 21 Dec 1881 and again on 12 Jan 1883 at the registrar’s office in North
Dublin. He was living at Stillorgan Park in 1887 and acted as a locum for Dr Boyce
at the Stillorgan Dispensary. They were living at Carbury Place in Blackrock in 1890
and Benjamin was the first doctor on the scene of the ‘Seapoint Tragedy’. They
moved to Australia and Benjamin was the health officer for Tarnagulla borough in
1891. Benjamin died suddenly at Tarnagulla, Victoria, Australia on 22 Mar 1894.
His widow took out letters of administration listing his only other known relatives as
Sarah Solley in Massachusetts and his aunt Catherine a spinster, address unknown.
3 Sarah Josephine Elizabeth Dickson born circa 1860 was resident at 5 Ulster Terrace
and married George Willis Solley on 25 June 1890 at Stillorgan Church. George was a
lecturer and clergyman from Springfield, Massachusetts and the son of David Treat
Solley and Sarah Augusta Wood. In 1911 George wrote a book on the Solley family
called 'The Story of a Hunt for an Ancestor. He dedicated the book to his wife Sarah
and his late son David. They legally adopted Agusta Fairey Spiller in 1906 who took
the family name. They were living in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1910 and George
and Sarah were Christian Scientist practitioners.
