John Barton born circa 1783 married Jane Culey on 12 Jul 1813. Jane was the only daughter
of James Culey of Newry. John was a merchant of 47 Bolton Street and later was a linen
and hosiery merchant of 44 Mary Street with a warehouse in Jervis Street. Five of their
children died as infants and were buried at St Mary’s. In 1828 John took a lease on some
of the lands of Priesthouse and renamed it Stonehouse. He put Alfreton, a house, ½ mile
from Donnybrook on the Stillorgan Road opposite Simpson’s Nursery up for sale in 1832.
He was a governor of the Bank of Ireland and a director of the Dublin and Belfast Junction
Railway Company. John died 9 Feb 1874 at Stonehouse and left 50K in personal estate.
Jane* died 1 Oct 1876 and left 4K in personal estate, both are buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Marianne Barton, eldest daughter born circa 1814 married Daniel Hutton on
4 Dec 1839. Daniel was from Dominic Street. Mary Anne died 24 Oct 1843 and
was buried with her sister Elizabeth in Mount Jerome.
2 Elizabeth Plunket Barton second daughter born circa 1820 died at Stonehouse on
28 Sep 1842 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
3 James Barton eldest son born circa 1826. He graduated Trinity College Dublin in
1842 and went on to become chief engineer to the Dundalk, Newry & Greenore
Railway line. He married Catherine Frances Golding on 27 Dec 1849 at St Peter’s
Church Dublin. Catherine was the eldest daughter of George Richard Golding of
Lime Park Lodge, Co Tyrone. They lived at Farndreg House, Dundalk. James built
the Boyne Viaduct with Sir John Macneill, Chief Engineer between 1851 and 1855.
Catherine died 3 Apr 1863.
1 Edward Golding Barton born circa 1852 worked for the Bengal Nagpur
Railway and died in 1913.
2 James Robert Barton born circa 1853 studied medicine and was a medical
officer at Wadsley Asylum, Yorkshire. He died 25 Sep 1896.
3 Henry Dupre Malkin Barton born circa 1856 was land agent and sheep
breeder and died unmarried in Antrim in 1934.
4 Catherine Barton born circa 1857 married Henry Edwar Noyes in 1878 and
they lived in Dundalk.
5 John George Barton born circa 1860 was an engineer and worked with his
father. He was commissioner of valuation and chief boundary surveyor of
Ireland. He was knighted in 1902.
6 Travers Boyne Barton born circa 1860. He was a surgeon to the Co Donegal
Infirmary, Lifford. He drowned at Prehen near Londonderry on 24 Apr 1888.
7 Mary Georgina (Molly) Barton second daughter born circa 1861 at Dundalk.
She studied at the Westminster School of Art and exhibited with the RHA in
1902. She travelled extensively throughout Europe, Mexico and India. She also
taught art and died unmarried in England in 1949.
James secondly married Mary Honoria Elizabeth Hewson on 25 Oct 1870 at Rathdrum.
Mary was the daughter of the Rev Francis Hewson. James had nine more children of
whom five survived in 1911. James died 13 Jan 1913 aged 87 years. Mary died
23 Jan 1933.
8 Francis Gerald Barton born circa 1871 died 15 Jun 1880.
9 Sarah Louisa Barton born circa 1879 living with her parents in 1911.
10 Anne Frances Caroline Barton died November 1881 aged 5 months.
11 Alice Victoria Barton died November 1883 aged 2 years.
4 Jane Long Barton born circa 1829 eldest daughter married George Robertson of
Ashover, Derbyshire on 10 Oct 1879 at Winsill Church, Burton on Trent. She died a
widow on 26 Jan 1918 at Tunbridge Wells.
5 Henry Malkin Barton, second son born circa 1830. He married Amelia Darley Crozier
at Taney Church on the 6 Jun 1865. Amelia was the eldest daughter of Thomas Crozier
of Seafield, Stillorgan. He was a public notary and they lived at Trafalgar Terrace in
Monkstown and moved to Stonehouse after the death of his father. He died on
1 Jan 1904 and left personal estate of 37K. He executors were his wife and nephews.
He left his share in his business to his partners. He was buried at Mount Jerome. Amelia
died 20 Feb 1915 aged 86 and was buried with her husband.
6 John Killock Barton born circa 1830 at Stonehouse was educated at Trinity College, BA
in 1854 and MD in 1861. He worked at the Whitworth Hospital and married Mary
Apjohn on 19 Apr 1860 at Booterstown Church. Mary was the daughter of James
Apjohn of South Hill, Booterstown. John was one of the foremost surgeons in Dublin.
Mary died 30 Aug 1891 and was buried at Mount Jerome. John moved to Mentone in the
South of France for his health in 1893 where he died in March 1894 and was buried there.
7 Isabella Barton born circa 1832 married the Rev Edward Busteed Moeran on 7 Feb 1865
at Taney Church. Edward was the vicar of Taney. Edward of Richview, Sydenham Road
was the son of Edward Moeran and Elizabeth Swanick.
8 Sarah (Zai) Barton youngest daughter born circa 1834. Sarah married Frank White on
2 Oct 1856 at Taney Church. Frank was a hosiery manufacturer from Loughborough,
Leicestershire. By 1871 they had seven children. Zai died a widow at the Widenings,
Loughborough on 3 Jul 1899.
9 Robert Barton youngest son born circa 1836. He was a lieutenant in the Royal Engineers
and married Wilhelmina Welby on 14 Jan 1864 at St Helena. Wilhelmina was the daughter
of the Rt Rev Dr Welby, Lord Bishop of St Helena. He retired a major general and died
11 Aug 1904 in Ealing.
* Jane’s brother Robert Cully died in 1885 and was buried with them.
