James Barry born circa 1837 son of James Barry of Thomas Street, Limerick was a solicitor
and stamp distributor of the City and County of Limerick. He married Elizabeth Brereton
on 28.04.1853 at the residence of the bride’s father. Elizabeth was the daughter of Ralph
Westropp Brereton and Ellen Mary Geary of Rockstown Castle. His older brother Charles
Robert Barry (1823 to 1897) was Solicitor-General for Ireland from 1868, Attorney-General
for Ireland in 1872 and served as Lord Justice of the Irish Court of Appeal from 1883.
James and the family moved to Dublin so that he could act as registrar to his brother.
James died 13.02.1883 at 48 Leinster Road, Rathmines and is buried in the family vault
at Mount St Laurence cemetery in Limerick. Elizabeth died 27.03.1916 at Monkstown
and is buried with her mother at Glasnevin.

aged 1 year and is buried at Mount St Laurence, Limerick.
2 Ralph Brereton Barry eldest son baptised 11.06.1856 in Limerick was educated at
Clongowes and Dublin University. He was a barrister, resident at 45 Leinster Road
with offices at Fitzwilliam Street when he married Claire Roche of 72 Harcourt Street
on 28.01.1884 at the Roman Catholic Church of St Kevin, Harrington Street, Dublin.
Claire was the daughter of William Roche late crown solicitor for the county of
Limerick. They lived at Rockmount, Dundrum from 1903 to 1905. He was KC and
County Court Judge for Kildare, Carlow, Wicklow and Wexford living at Pembroke
Road by 1911. He was a amateur actor and a member of the Shakespearean Society.
Claire was president of the Red Cross Work Guild and fundraised during WW1 by
producing plays and concerts. Ralph and Clair were heads of the management
committee at Temple Hill Auxiliary Hospital where Claire interviewed and
employed nurses and other staff. Ralph died on 16.03.1920 Northumberland
Road late of Langara, Glenageary, Dublin. Claire died 26.02.1955 at Fitzwilliam Place
and left 19k in personal estate. Her executor was Terence De Vere White.
1 James Gerald Joseph Brereton Barry born 12.12.1896 at 20 Upper Fitzwilliam
Street. He studied at Trinity College but had to go abroad for a time having got
ill. He graduated from the College of Surgeons in 1913 and served with the
RAMC but was invalided out by 1917. He helped his mother in organising
concerts and plays in aid of charities connected with the war. He moved to
England and was house surgeon at Worcester Hospital. He later moved to
Weymouth where he was a public vaccinator and medical officer. He died
unmarried at Preston Road, Weymouth on 29.11.1941.
2 William Roche Brereton Barry 2nd son born 11.01.1898 at 18 Upper Mount
Street. He was educated at Mount Benedict in Wexford and the Oratory School,
Birmingham and at Trinity College, Dublin. He was in the Officers’ Training
Corps and joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He was killed in action on
16.08.1917 near Ypres and is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium.
3 Ralph Brereton Barry born 02.10.1899 at 18 Upper Mount Street educated at
Mount Benedict in Wexford and the Oratory School, Birmingham. An amateur
actor from an early age he took part in performances of Twelfth Night and
Hamlet at the Abbey Theatre. He was called to the Irish bar in 1922 and to the
English bar in 1933. Ralph a Senior Counsel died unmarried of typhus on
02.12.1943 aged 44 years at Cork Street Hospital late of Millbrook, Eglington
Road, Donnybrook. Ralph left an estate of £2,668.
3 Ellen Mary Barry baptised 01.03.1858 at St Michael’s, Limerick. She died circa 1861
aged 3 years.
4 Charles Robert Barry baptised 22.12.1859 at St Michael’s, Limerick. In 1871 Charles
aged 11 years was a student at Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire. Charles married
Elizabeth Marie Goodman on 06.07.1889 at St Clements, Mossman’s Bay, Sydney. He
worked as a commercial traveller for the South Coast and West Camden Co-operative
Company. Charles, son of James and Elizabeth, died after a driving accident on
05.10.1897 at Prince Alfred Hospital, NSW.
5 William John Geary Barry 3rd son baptised 21.11.1861 at St Michael’s, Limerick. He
died on 14.10.1877 aged 15 years at the residence of his father in Rathgar. William
was a nephew of Judge Barry.
6 Mary Pauline Barry born circa 1863. In 1911 Pauline was a national school teacher
living with her mother Elizabeth and the Robinson family at 2 Brighton New in
Blackrock. She died 14.11.1961 at a Monkstown nursing home.
7 Elizabeth Barry Robinson born 03.08.1867 at 85 George's Street, Limerick. Elizabeth
of Belleville Avenue, Rathgar married Arthur Herbert Robinson on 01.07.1895 at the
Roman Catholic Chapel of Three Patrons, Rathgar. Arthur was from Bradford and the
son of George Alexander Robinson. In 1911 the family were living at Brighton New,
Monkstown.
