Henry Lionel Barnardo born 19 Sep 1847 at Dame Street son of John Michael Barnardo of
Prussia and his second wife Abigail Amelia O’Brien. Henry was a merchant of 5 Clarinda
Park, Kingstown. He took over the running of J M Barnardo after the death of his father and
from 1874 they traded from 108 Grafton Street (opposite the Provost House). He married
Anna Martha Bull on 15 Jan 1881 at Christ Church, Monkstown. Anna was living at Victoria
Terrace, Kingstown and was the daughter of John Bull of Sallins Lodge, Co Kildare. They
were living in Ely Place in 1901 and 1911 and of their five children only three had survived.
Henry was a furrier master, JP and PLG and the brother of Dr Thomas John Barnardo,
philanthropist and founder/director of homes for waifs and strays at Stepney. Henry died
23 Dec 1911 and was interred at Mount Jerome. Martha died 13 Apr 1913 and was
interred with her husband.
1 Ethel Cecilia Florine Barnardo born 2 Sep 1881 at Rathgar living with her parents in
Ely Place in 1911. Ethel was a VAD during WW1. She had a shoplifting problem
despite having money and was imprisoned twice. She died a spinster in Kensington
in 1955.
2 Violet Bernardo born 21 Dec 1882 at Auburn Villa died 22 Jan 1883.
3 Wilfred Henry Cecil Barnardo born 27 Mar 1884 at Auburn Villa, Rathgar. Henry was
in Canada in 1911 but returned to Dublin after the death of his father to take charge
of the firm. Henry a merchant married Helen Josephine McDonald on 28 Jun 1922 at
St Andrew’s, Dublin. Helen was the daughter of John McDonald, a merchant. Henry
was a keen photographer and cine and some of his reels taken of his son at St
Columba’s School in the 1930s are available on the school’s website.* They moved to
Tanrego in 1936. In 1939 Henry was presented with a Waterford Glass chandelier by
the staff having served as manager of the firm of J M Bernardo for 25 years. The
presentation took place at Tanrego on Avoca Avenue. Henry Barney, a skin merchant
died 27 Jun 1944 at Tanrego. Ellen died 6 May 1953 at the Adelaide Hospital late of
Rathgar.
1 Thomas Henry (Harry) Barnardo born 1923 educated at St Columba’s was living
at Tanrego, Avoca Avenue in 1944. He took over the business on the death of
his father. He designed and attended fashion shows all over Europe. He also
chose all the skins. He was a talented painter and keen photographer. He
travelled across American taking cine film and slides which he showed in Dublin
to the Rotary Club and the Criterion Club.
4 Gwendoline Olive Barnardo born 10 Sep 1886 at Rathgar living with her parents in Ely
Place in 1911. She married George James Statham of Asktown House, Kilkenny on
26 Apr 1916 at Sandford Church. Georges was a motor car proprietor and the son of
John Robert Statham, a merchant and his wife Susan. George died in 1950 and
Gwendoline died in 1963.
5 Daughter Bernardo born 22 Nov 1887 at Auburn Villa, Rathgar died shortly after birth.
