William Barclay born 25 May 1825 joined the Indian Army as a cadet in 1845. He was a major in
the Madras Staff Corps. He married Kate Thwaites on 2 Dec 1869 at Kilkee, Co Clare. Kate was
the third daughter of John Hawtrey Thwaites MD, Ceylon and his wife Marrienne Andrews.
William attained the rank of Lieut Colonel with the 25th Madras Native Infantry. He died on
27 Mar 1872 and was buried at Bellary. Kate received a pension of £225 per annum. Kate and
her sister Sarah were living at 32 Wellington Road in 1911.
1 Mary (Moy) Barclay elder daughter born 11 Oct 1870 in Madras married Spotswood Robert
Bowles, MA, TCD of 4 St James’ Terrace on 22 Apr 1912 at Christchurch, Leeson Park.
Spotswood was a solicitor and had offices at Westmoreland Street. He was the son of
Archdeacon John Wright Bowles of Killaloe, a former rector of Shinrone and Nenagh. They
lived at Clonlea, Dundrum. John was head of the firm of Bowles and French, solicitors and
retired due to ill health in 1932. Spotswood died 2 Feb 1937 aged 74 and was buried at
Mount Jerome. He was survived by his wife and two brothers. Mary died 13 Aug 1962 at
Tudor House and was buried with her husband.
2 Millicent Barclay born 10 Jul 1872 in Ceylon. Millicent and her sister moved into Tudor
House Dundrum circa 1944. Millicent died unmarried on 26 Oct 1869 at Sir Patrick Dun’s
Hospital late of Tudor House, Dundrum. She was buried at Mount Jerome with her sister and
brother in law.
