Arthur Baker Attorney 1st son of Henry and Mary Magenis born 27.04.1783 aged 16 on
27.04.1800. He was educated at Balbriggan and admitted Kings Inns in 1801. He married
Jane Hanna circa 1810. Jane was the daughter of the late Samuel Hanna and Jane
Hutchinson of Newry. He was a attorney with offices at 84 Upper Gardiner Street. His town
residence was at Mountjoy square and his county residence was Balheary House in Swords.
Arthur was treasurer of the County Dublin grand jury, and was land agent to Thomas Claud
Hamilton and solicitor to Lord Meath. He purchased Frankfort circa 1851 and set about
building on the site. Arthur was elected a town councillor in 1856. He came into conflict with
the builder of Frankfort Castle, who took him to court in 1859 to get payment and Arthur
counter sued citing poor workmanship. Arthur retired in 1859 and died 17.07.1863 at
Frankfort Castle. He left 9k in personal estate; probate to his son Henry. Jane died 08.11.1866
aged 78 at 29 Lower Leeson Street and is buried at Mount Jerome. Probate was to her son
Henry of Balheary House.
1 Henry Baker only son born 04.03.1811 in Dublin educated at Trinity College and
admitted Kings Inns. He went travelling abroad and returned to a impressive reception
from his family and the tenants on the Swords estate n 1835. He was called to the Irish
bar in 1838. He married Belinda Sayers 4th daughter of Richard Sayers of Greenmount
and niece of Lord and Lady Talbot of Malahide on 03.04.1839 at Malahide Church. He
was secretary to the grand jury of Dublin as well as a landlord and grazier, with over 1000
acres at Swords. He was on the Balrothery Union board of Guardians and elected
chairman in 1875 and 1884. Belinda died on 31.01.1885 aged 62 years at Leeson Park
House and Henry a widower died on 31.12.1886 at Balheary House, Swords. Probate to
his nephew Francis.
2 Jane Baker eldest daughter married Barry Drew of Flower Hill, Waterford son of Barry
Drew on 30.08.1842 at St George’s Church, Dublin. Jane died on 03.06.1874 aged 58
years at Devonshire Place and Barry died on 07.04.1880 aged 84 years at Flower Hill.
1 Arthur Drew born 20.09.1843 at Mountjoy Square the residence of her father. Arthur
died of phthisis on 04.03.1879 aged 35 years at Flower Hill. Probate to Henry Baker.
2 Juliana Catherine Drew born 14.10.1845 at Blessington Street. Juliana died on
15.02.1850 aged 4 years and 4 months in Dublin.
3 Mary Baker born 25.09.1817 married Rev Hans Butler, Vicar of Lismore, Waterford son of
Francis Butler of Rathmoyle House, Laois on 12.09.1839 at St George’s Church, Dublin.
Mary died 02.02.1860 at Villierstown Glebe and Hans died on 07.01.1891 aged 82 years at
12 Ranelagh Road and is buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Son Butler stillborn on 22.03.1841 at the residence of her father in Mountjoy
Square.
2 Son Butler born 06.07.1842 at the residence of her father in Mountjoy Square only
survived a short time.
3 Jeanette Rhoda Butler born circa 28.02.1844 at Mountjoy Square. She married
Frederick Kennedy on 22.07.1867 at St Kevin’s Church, Dublin. Frederick was the
son of Frederick Kennedy. Jeanette died on 01.01.1879 aged 34 years at 9 Adelaide
Street, Kingstown.
4 Francis Theobald Butler born circa 26.01.1846 at Lismore. Francis died on 07.07.1933
of Glenfairn, Avondale Road, Fleet, Hampshire.
5 Mary Letitia Butler 2nd and youngest daughter born 25.09.1847 and died 14.07.1857
aged 10 years. A memorial tablet for Mary Letitia Butler was erected within St
Carthage’s Cathedral, Lismore.
6 Pauline Butler infant daughter died 24.03.1850 at Villierstown Glebe.
7 Henry Stuart Butler born circa 08.05.1852 at Youghal. He was a solicitor and died
29.06.1887 aged 35 years at Bromley, Kent the residence of his brother. Probate
granted to Francis T Butler.
