Arthur Arlott born baptised 30 Jun 1872 at Silchester, Hartfordshire son of Robert Arlott, a
carpenter/thatcher and his wife Caroline Clements. He was living with his parents and four
siblings in 1881 at Boxditch Cottage, Silchester. His father died in 1889 and his mother died
in 1892. Arthur worked for Thomas Talbot Power in Ireland from circa 1893. He married
Mary Anne Seldon on 11 Apr 1904 at the Curraha Chapel, Dunshaughlin. Mary Anne was
the daughter of Charles Seldon, a painter. She was also a lady’s maid to the Talbot Power
family. Arthur was charged with driving too fast in 1910 (27MPH when speed limit was
20MPH). Thomas Talbot Power and his wife both defended his driving, Thomas said Arthur
was an experience driver and had driven him over 3000 miles through France, Austria,
Germany Switzerland and Italy. Arthur explained to the judge how a speedometer was
more accurate than two police men with a stopwatch. He was not convicted. Arthur
continued working for the Talbot Powers and was a chauffeur at Thornhill in 1911 and
was still with him in Hampshire in 1923. Mary Anne who was a number of years his senior
died 2 Nov 1930 at Farnham House private asylum, Finglas and was buried at Deansgrange.
Arthur was baptised at Booterstown Church in 1932 prior to his second marriage. He married
Kathleen McDermott on 14 Sep 1932 at the Church of St Bridget, Howth. Kathleen was a sub
postmistress living at Artane and the daughter of Edward McDermott, a postmaster. When
Sir Thomas died in 1930, he left £200 a year to Arthur for life with remainder to his present
wife. Arthur died on 15 Dec 1933 at 89 Mount Merrion Avenue and was buried at
Deansgrange with his first wife. He left over 4k in personal estate. Kathleen died at St
Columcille’s Hospital on 24 Jun 1970 aged 79 late of 119 Mount Merrion Avenue and was
buried at Deansgrange. No issue of either marriage was found.
