James Kennedy born circa 1788 was a flax mill owner of Millvale and married Ellen Coates on
1 Dec 1813. Ellen was the daughter of Victor Coates of Snugboro and the Lagan foundry. Her
brother William built the first iron steamship in Ireland in 1838. James was trading as Messrs
Kennedy & sons of the Falls Road in 1842 when a drying loft at the spinning mill caught fire.
In the 1840s he had a house built for himself by Thomas Jackson, architects, at Clonard
Gardens called Clonard House. He died from typhus fever on 18 Nov 1843. Millvale House
close to the turnpike on the Falls Road was put up for let in 1851. Ellen died 2 May 1865 at
Clonard House. Both are buried at Knockbreda Cemetery.
1 Mary Bell Kennedy born circa 1818. She died a spinster on 4 Jan 1888 at Clonard
House and was buried at Knockbreda Cemetery.
2 James Kennedy born circa 1819 inherited his father’s flax mill in 1843. In 1865, the
Falls Flax Spinning Company Ltd was formed and James rotated the directorship of the
company with his brother Victor. James of Clonard House, Co Antrim married widow
Amelia Charlotte McCance on 22 Dec 1868 at St Stephen’s Church, Dublin. Amelia was
the youngest daughter of William and Harriet Sinclaire of Hoboken, New Jersey, United
States. She was the widow of William McCance, a commission agent who she married
in June 1867 in New Jersey and who died in July 1867 in Belfast.
Both James and Amelia were resident in Belfast. He purchased Richmond Lodge,
Knocknagoney, Strandtown, Co Down in 1874. Richmond lodge was a large Georgian
house and James set about refurbishing the house. Here they hosted numerous events
including the wedding of Emily Sinclaire, Amelia’s cousin. James died 17 May 1897 and
left 28k in personal estate. Amelia sold Richmond Lodge to the Rt Hon Henry Holmes
Lyons and moved to Dalguise in Monkstown by 1901. She commissioned architects
James John Phillips and his son (of the same name) of 61 Royal Avenue, Belfast to
rebuild and enlarge Dalguise at a cost of £4000. Amelia died 19 Sep 1912 aged 67 and
left 26k in personal estate. They had no children.
3 Victor Coates Kennedy born circa 1821. He part owner with his brother James of
mills around Belfast. He was also a partner in McConnell Kennedy, Flax spinners of
Belfast. The mill became the Falls Flax Company and Victor and his brother James
were directors. Victor and his sister Ellen lived at Clonard House, Belfast. He was
also the owner of Burrishoole House, Westport, Co Mayo. He was appointed to the
Commission of Peace in Mayo in 1875. He died a bachelor on 23 May 1894 at
Clonard House, Falls Road and was buried at Knockbreda Cemetery. He left 15k in
personal estate, his brother James his executor. Clonard House was then sold to the
Redemptorists who set up a convent.
4 Susanna Kennedy born circa 1822 died on 1 Oct 1834 and was buried at Knockbreda
Cemetery.
5 Catherine Coates (Kate) Kennedy second daughter born circa 1824 married Andrew
Allen Kennedy at St Ann’s Church, Belfast on 15 Jan 1844. Andrew was a solicitor and
the third son of the late A A Kennedy of Dublin. They lived at Queen Street where
Catherine died 16 Dec 1844. She is buried at Knockbreda Cemetery.
6 Ellen Kennedy born circa 1827 in Co Down lived at Clonard House until the death of her
brother Victor. She was on the committees of a number of charitable organisations.
She died unmarried on 2 Mar 1917 at ‘Insch Marlo’, Marlborough Park, Belfast and is
buried at Knockbreda Cemetery. She left 29k in personal estate, William Coates was one
of her executors.
7 Eliza Kennedy youngest daughter born circa 1830 died 26 July 1845 and is buried at
Knockbreda Cemetery.
