Samuel Allman born circa 1849 in Bandon, Co Cork son of William Allman, a nailer. Samuel
was a teacher and married Annie Elizabeth Nicol at Brigown Church, Mitchelstown, Cork on
18 Apr 1870. Annie was the daughter of George Nicol, an excise officer. They had ten
children of whom nine survived in 1911. He was an inspector of schools by 1894. He was
living at Portobello in 1901 and had retired by 1911 and was living Clonliffe Road, Drumcondra.
Samuel died 27 Mar 1913 at ‘Vendome’, 76 Clonliffe Road. Annie died at 47 Eglantine Avenue,
Belfast, the residence of her son in law on 22 Feb 1930.
1 Dora Elizabeth Allman born 25 Jun 1871 at Bandon, Cork baptised at Christchurch,
Kilbrogan, Cork in 1871. She was the first female medical graduate at Queens University,
Cork passing her first exams in 1892 and graduating in 1898. She was appointed
Assistant Medical Superintendent at Armagh in 1899 having served as assistant at Mullingar
Asylum for over four years. She was the first woman to be appointed Resident Medical
officer in the British Isles when she was appointed RSO at Armagh mental hospital in 1931
on a salary of £600 plus £150 allowances. Her salary was increased by £100 a year in 1934.
Dora retired in 1936 and moved to Sandymount. She was a member of the Antiquarian
Society in 1937 and died 25 Feb 1955 at ‘Karavanagh’, 52 Sandymount Avenue. She is
buried in Deansgrange.
2 Henrietta Hope Allman born 25 July 1873 at Bantry, Cork. She married Francis Lavelle at
Parsonstown on 27 Mar 1894. Francis was a teacher at the Model School, Parsonstown
and the son of William Lavelle, a farmer. Henrietta died at Chichester Avenue, Antrim
Road on 22 Dec 1948.
3 Janet Thompson (Jennie) Allman born 12 Jun 1875 at Bantry, Co Cork a nurse living with her
parents in 1901. She married Thomas William Francis Jones on 4 Aug 1903 at Clontarf
Parish Church. Thomas was a Trinity graduate and the son Thomas William Hones, a builder.
4 William Browne Allman born 26 Jul 1876 in Ligoniel, Belfast, Co Antrim. He was educated at
Dundalk Grammar School. He received is MA in 1901 and was ordained the following year.
Rev William of Market Hill, Armagh married Adelaide Kennedy Birney of Tudor House,
Clontarf on 21 Jun 1905 at the Church of John the Baptist, Clontarf. Adelaide was the
daughter of William Birney. The wedding reception was held at Tudor House, the bride wore
white Crêpe de Chine, trimmed with old Limerick lace. Her sister Liala Maud Birney acted as
bridesmaid and the couple honeymooned in North Wales. They were living in Armagh in
1911 and he was an army chaplain during WW1. He was appointed rector of Benburb leaving
in 1926 when he was appointed rector of St Peter’s Drogheda. On a scouting trip in 1931, he
injured his leg, it later had to be amputated and his resigned his ministry in 1932. He took
over the Brunswick Press which his brother in law George Birney, solicitor had been the
proprietor of. Adelaide died 1 Feb 1933 at 48 St Kevin’s Park aged 50.
1 Claude Travers Allman born 5 Set 1908 at Portobello House, father resident at Milltown
Rectory. He graduated Trinity with a physics degree and was the leader of an 18 piece
jazz band. He worked with his father in the printing business. He married Hilda
Constance Partridge in 1934 at Reading. Hilda died at the Elpis Hospital on 26 Oct 1943
late of Melville, Avoca Avenue aged 30. She is buried at Deansgrange.
Claude was living at Sycamore Avenue, Mount Merrion when he secondly married Clare
Powell, a widow and daughter of Owen O’Ryan, a banker on 19 Apr 1949 at St Annes,
Shankill, Co Dublin.
2 Liala Adelaide Allman born 17 May 1911 at Lower Baggot Street, father resident at
Portadown Rectory. She was educated at Rutland College, Dublin and Trinity College,
Dublin graduating in 1933 and then worked at the Brunswick press. She served with the
Auxiliary Territorial Service in Britain during WW2. She took over the University Press on
the death of her father. She resigned as managing director in January 1976.
William was living at 48 St Kevin’s Park, Dartry Road when he secondly married Anna Kathleen
Potterton on 29 Aug 1934 at St Philip’s Church Milltown. Anna was a widow living at 32 St
Kevin’s Park and the daughter of George Armstrong. They lived at ‘Elms’, Mount Merrion
Avenue from 1936 to 1949. William, his son and daughter were all trained singers and would
entertain friends and at events as a trio as well as performing solo. William was also
proprietor of the University Press by 1944. William died 4 Apt 1958 at 3, The Rise, Mount
Merrion, his daughter Liala the informant. He is buried at Deansgrange. Anna died at
Glensilva Nursing Home, Monkstown on 4 Oct 1961.
5 David George Allman born 1 Oct 1878 at 3 Gibraltar Terrace, Cork City was a theology student
living with his parents in 1901. He was chaplain to Dr Steeven’s Hospital in 1901 and appointed
to the incumbency of Louth and Killencoole in 1916. David died in London on 28 Oct 1960.
6 Emily Kathleen Allman born 29 Aug 1880 at 3 Gibraltar Terrace, Cork was a National School
teacher living with her parents in 1911. She died unmarried on 26 Aug 1947. Her brother
George her executor.
7 Anna Louisa Allman born 1 Feb 1883 at Magnolia Terrace, Cork City was a National School
monitress living with her parents in 1901 and a National School teacher living with her parents
in 1911. Anna married George Baynham on 13 Oct 1916 at St George’s Church Dublin. George
was a bank clerk and the son of John Baynham, a merchant.
8 James Allman died at 6 days at Brighton Square on 5 Jun 1884.
9 Ethel Maud Allman born 8 Jun 1885 at 61 Brighton Square, Rathmines, Dublin was living with
her parents in 1901. She married Andrew Edward Watt on 16 Apr 1914 at St Georges Church.
Andrew was a bank clerk and the son of Andrew Watt, a corn buyer.
10 Percy Nicol Allman born 22 May 1887 at Parsonstown, Kings County living with his parents in
1901. He was a physician & surgeon and married ethel Annie Waldron in 1916 at Portsmouth.
He secondly married Ellen Bluck and they were living in Greenwich, London in 1921 and
Battersea in 1939.
