Alexander family of Belmont and Seamount, Stillorgan
William Alexander third son of John Alexander, Ballyclose in Limavady moved to Dublin and was
a wholesale merchant and linen factor. He married Mary Porter of Vicardale, Co Monaghan in
1736.
1 William Alexander born circa 1743 was a wholesale merchant and Colonel in the Royal
Dublin Militia. He was alderman of Dublin City from 1779 until his death. He married
Catherine Mapas in 1764. Catherine was the daughter and heiress to John Folie Mapas,
barrister of Rochestown, Co Dublin. William was Lord Mayor of Dublin 1787/8. He was a
member of the Ouzel Galley, the Paving Commission and the Ballast Board. They lived at
Belmont, Stillorgan from 1809 to 1815 and attended Stillorgan Parish Church and William
was created a baronet in 1809. He started Alexander’s Bank circa 1809 but during the
banking crisis of 1820 it failed as did 40% of the banks in Ireland. To avoid bankruptcy,
his property was auctioned and vested with trustees for the creditors. William died
10 May 1822 at Sackville Street aged 79. Catherine died in May 1824 at Farmlee, Co Dublin.
1 Eliza Alexander married John Hamilton in 1797.
2 Catherine Alexander married Robert Hamilton in 1797 and they lived at Clonsilla.
3 Robert Alexander eldest son born circa 1769 married Eliza Wallis, ML 15 Jun 1796.
Eliza was the daughter of James Wallis, a barrister of William Street. Robert became
the 2nd baronet on the death of his father. Sir Robert died at St James’ Place,
London in December 1859.
1 William John Alexander born circa 1797, attorney-general to HRH The Prince of
Wales He became the 3rd baronet and died on 13 Apr 1873 without issue at
Kensington. He left 120K in personal estate to his brother.
2 John Wallis Alexander born circa 1800 graduated Trinity College Dublin and
Cambridge and was called to the bar. He married Lady Lepel Charlotte Phipps.
Charlotte died on 29 Jan 1869. John became the 4th baronet in 1873 on the
death of his brother. He died without issue on 25 Oct 1888.
4 William John Alexander born circa 1771. He was living at Belcamp and married his
cousin Isabella Alexander in March 1815. Isabella was the daughter of Robert
Alexander of Seamount. They had at least seven children. William was granted a
name change circa 1846. William Alexander Shaw of Caledon, Co Tyrone, and Co
Meath died on 14 May 1856 at 9 Leinster Street.
1 William Alexander-Shaw (later Alexander) born circa 1817 lived at Cruisetown,
Co Meath and the Old Rectory, Stoke, near Guildford died in 1885.
1 William Ferdinand Alexander became the 5th Baronet.
2 Lionel Cecil William Alexander became the 6th Baronet.
2 Robert Alexander born circa 1748 was a wine merchant of 15 Sackville Street and a partner
in Newcomen's Bank. He was MP for Dingle from 1773 to 1783 and Newtown from 1797 to
1800. He married Henrietta Judith Quin in 1785 and lived at Sackville Street and Seamount,
Stillorgan (now The Radisson Hotel) until 1826. Henrietta was the daughter of Henry Quin,
Doctor of Physicks. He was one of the first two church wardens of SS Philip and James. He
was High Sheriff of Dublin in 1806. He died 14 Jul 1827 at his house in Regent’s Park,
London. Henrietta died 14 Jan 1839.

2 Henry Alexander younger son born April 1787 at Sackville Street was a director of the
East India Company. He was MP for Barnstaple in England and lived at Battle Abbey.
He later lived at Belmont House in East Barnett. He died in 1861
3 Charles Alexander third son born May 1789 at Sackville Street. He took Holy orders and
was living at Caldedon, Co Tyrone when he married Elizabeth Ann Godfrey at Newark,
Nottinghamshire in Oct 1817. Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of Edward S Godfrey
of Newark.
4 Richard Alexander fourth son born March 1797 at Sackville Street joined the Royal
Engineers. He married Frances Gayer in 1829. He died at Penzance, Cornwall on
26 Apr 1835.
1 Son Alexander born April 1831 at Belfast.
2 Frances Henrietta Alexander only daughter born circa 1832 died at 12 Herbert
Place on 18 Feb 1846.
5 John Alexander fifth son joined the navy and attained the rank of lieutenant. He was
aboard the HM Conscience and was lost at sea in April 1822. His sea chest washed up
at Mizen Head.
6 Anne Elizabeth Alexander, eldest daughter married the Rev Joshua Nussey at
Marylebone Church London in March 1832.
7 Isabella Alexander married her cousin William John Alexander of Belcamp in March 1815.
William John was the son of William Alexander.
8 Harriet Alexander, third daughter died 20 Mar 1823.
