Alexander Smith born circa 1830 married Elizabeth (Bessie) Nolan at St Mary’s Haddington Road on
22 Apr 1854. Their witnesses were James Nolan and Bridget Gaharan. Parents name and address is not
noted in the marriage register. Alexander entered the Service of Irish Lights on 1 Sep 1858 aged 34
years. In April 1878 it was reported 'that seaman Patrick Gallagher had remained ashore without
permission after his leave had expired. A letter to the Commissioners from the Master, Alexander Smith,
stated that this was not Gallagher's first offence. As a result, Gallagher was ordered to be dismissed and
the Master was called on to explain why the earlier absences were not reported. Captain Smith replied
that Gallagher told him his mother was ill in hospital and that he waited on two occasions to see if she
would improve. The Master was censured and informed that if there was any repeat of this neglect of
duty that 'the Board would deal summarily with him.'
In November 1880 Captain Alexander Smith suffered a stroke and Doctor Filson of Portaferry
recommended that he be given 6 weeks leave for the benefit of his health. Leave was granted, but
Alexander died on 11 Mar 1881 at the South Rock dwellings. His daughter Sarah was in attendance. He
is buried in Ballygalget graveyard where a headstone was erected in his memory. Elizabeth died at
her residence No 35 Queen’s Terrace off Brunswick (Pearse) Street on the 23 Oct 1888 aged 51 and was
buried at Glasnevin cemetery on 26 Oct 1888 (E70 Garden). Her daughter Margaret, resident at 35
Queen's Terrace was the informant and Bridget Geoghegan of the same address gave the particulars to
Glasnevin Cemetery. Her funeral notice notes her as the widow of Captain Alexander Smith, Captain of
the South Rock Lightship and youngest sister of James Nolan, 7 Hanover Quay, late H M Customs.* The
newspaper notice also asks American newspaper to copy so we must presume that she had family living
there.

2 Mary Smyth born 20 Oct 1858. Of 6 Hanover quay she married William Barry on 1 Nov 1878, at
Haddington Road Chapel. The witnesses were Mary Dixon and Dominick Godfrey. William was
an engineer living at 2 Bridge Street, Ringsend and the son of James Barry, publican and
shipwright and his wife Elizabeth. Mary died 4 Jan 1885 at 12 Queen Street. In 1901 William a
widower was working as an engine fitter and living with his three daughters at Island Street. His
mother, father, unmarried brother and two spinster sisters were living with them. In 1911
William was unemployed and living with his daughter Mary at Pembroke Cottages in Ringsend.
William died at St Patrick’s House late of Sandwith Street 8 Nov 1925 aged 71.
1 Elizabeth Barry born 24 Aug 1879 was living at 23 Island Street and married Robert Talbot
at on 26 Oct 1904 at St Audeon’s Church. Their witnesses were Agnes Barry and Patrick
Rourke. Robert, a labourer was living at 12 Charlotte Terrace and was the son of Adam
Talbot, a farmer in Co Kildare. They were living at 23 Island Street in 1911. Robert worked
at Guinness’ from 23 Jul 1901 until 13 July 1912. He was living in Co Kildare in 1915.
Elizabeth died 10 Apr 1931 at Ballyshannon and Robert died there on 1 Apr 1955 aged 81.

the son of James Hatton of Knockraheen, Roundwood. Winifred and Michael separated
and no issue has been found. Winifred died a widow on 6 Aug 1967 at Corrig Avenue, Dun
Laoghaire and was buried with her brother Alexander at Deansgrange.

and later a tram conductor. He married Mary and died at Jervis Street Hospital on
20 May 1951 late of 13 Corrig Road, Dalkey and was buried at Deansgrange. Mary was

Ward on 18 Sep 1912 at St Paul's Church. Jim was involved in a bigamist marriage in
1921 with Mary McCarty. Christina died 1 May 1928, her mother in law Margaret the

retired in 1957. He died a bachelor at Harold's Cross late of 7 Landscape Gardens,
Churchtown on 3 Dec 1969.
4 Francis Clarke Dalton born 1 Mar 1897 at 10 Island Street. He was a motor driver and later
a fitter. He worked on the construction of the sugar factory in Carlow. He married Mary
Waters of South Cumberland Street on 18 Apr 1917 at St Andrew's, Westland Row. Mary
Elizabeth died at 31 South Cumberland Street on 6 Jul 1918 and was buried at Glasnevin
(ID 37 St Pauls).
1 Francis Dalton 5 July 1918 at Cumberland Street died at 23 Island Street on
1 Jan 1920 and was buried at Glasnevin (ID 37 St Pauls).
Frank secondly married Eileen Power on 6 May 1920 at St Audeon's. Eileen was
resident at 23 Island Street and was the daughter of Michael Power, a carpenter.
She died at the Rotunda Hospital on 28 Dec 1921 aged 23, the day after giving birth,
her mother in law Margaret in attendance.

27 Dec 1921 at the Rotunda Hospital. She married John A Cullen on 26 Dec 1941 at
St Audeon's Church. Witnesses: Patrick Power & Constance Eakins. John was a
coach builder of 30 Temple Street and was the son of John Cullen, a waiter.
Frank thirdly married Elizabeth O'Keefe on 1 Feb 1925 at St Nicholas' Church, Francis Street.
Elizabeth was the daughter of John O'Keefe, a farmer from Queen's County and they had
six children.
5 Mary Bridget Dalton born 15 Apr 1899 at 38 Ushers Quay. She died from Spanish flu on
5 Nov 1918 at 23 Island Street aged 19 and is buried at Glasnevin ( St Pauls ID 37).
6 Patrick Joseph (Paddy) Dalton born 20 Mar 1901 was an engineer having served his
apprenticeship at Hubbard Engineering. He worked for Wilsons, then in BP servicing
petrol pumps. He later worked in Clarnico Murray, where he was appointed chief
engineer. He married Ellen Murphy on 14 Sep 1927 at St James' Church. Eileen was the
daughter of Thomas Murphy, a pork butcher and Bridget Keenan. Captain Patrick Dalton
died 2 Dec 1959 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
7 Alexander Patrick (Lally) Dalton born 17 Mar 1903 at 4 Usher Street was a commissionaire.
He married Elizabeth Peppard on 30 April 1946 at St Joseph's Church, Berkeley Road.
They lived at 27 A Upper Wellington Street in Dublin. Both Alex and Elizabeth worked as
commissionaires. Lally died 2 Jun 1961 and Elizabeth died 26 Mar 1976. They had
no issue and both are buried at Glasnevin (grave number VK 224.5 St Patricks) with
Elizabeth's parents Ann Catherine and Charles Peppard.
8 Elizabeth Dalton born 19 Jan 1905 at 35 Ushers Quay. She died from Spanish flu on
11 Nov 1918 at 23 Island Street aged 13 and is buried at Glasnevin (St Pauls ID 37 St
Pauls).
9 Thomas Christopher Dalton born 23 May 1907 at1 Ushers Street married Monica
Anne (Nancy) Trunk on 15 Apr 1939 Parish of St Pauls, Arran Quay and they had
Three children. Tommy was a fitter working at Clarnico's. Nancy died 23 Feb 1954 at
1 Connaught Street and was buried at Glasnevin ID 37 St Pauls. Tommy secondly married
Margaret Mary Trunk.
10 Arthur Oliver D'Alton born 19 Jul 1909 at 1 Ushers Street. He attained the rank of
Colonel in the Irish Army and was based at the Curragh Camp. He married Elizabeth
Byrne on 17 Jun 1938 at Rathgar RC Church and they had three children. Arthur died
19 Aug 1960 at St Brickin's late of 25 Beechwood park, Ranelagh.

a flannel weaver and died at 4 Fair View Road, Irishtown (the home of her son in law). She is buried at
Glasnevin F 70 Garden. Glasnevin gives Eliza Nowlan of 2 Howard Place, Kingstown as the informant and
the death register give Bridget Grogregan (Geoghegan?) of 4 Fair View, Irishtown as the informant.
Bridget Nolan sister of Elizabeth married James Geoghegan. Their son Thomas Geoghegan baptised in
1855 drowned in Dublin Bay in 1880.
Charles? Bulger died 1 Aug 1872 or 1882 (unidentified connection).
William Cullen buried 1 Aug 1882 (a bachelor fisherman of 23 Pembroke Street, Irishtown - unidentified

Frank secondly married Eileen Power on 6 May 1920 at St Audeon's. Eileen was
resident at 23 Island Street and was the daughter of Michael Power, a carpenter.
She died at the Rotunda Hospital on 28 Dec 1921 aged 23, the day after giving birth,
her mother in law Margaret in attendance.
1 Mary Bridget (Molly) Dalton born to Eileen Irwin(?) of 60 Queen Street on
27 Dec 1921 at the Rotunda Hospital. She married John A Cullen on 26 Dec 1941 at
St Audeon's Church. Witnesses: Patrick Power & Constance Eakins. John was a
coach builder of 30 Temple Street and was the son of John Cullen, a waiter.
Frank thirdly married Elizabeth O'Keefe on 1 Feb 1925 at St Nicholas' Church, Francis Street.
Elizabeth was the daughter of John O'Keefe, a farmer from Queen's County and they had
six children.
5 Mary Bridget Dalton born 15 Apr 1899 at 38 Ushers Quay. She died from Spanish flu on
5 Nov 1918 at 23 Island Street aged 19 and is buried at Glasnevin ( St Pauls ID 37).
6 Patrick Joseph (Paddy) Dalton born 20 Mar 1901 was an engineer having served his
apprenticeship at Hubbard Engineering. He worked for Wilsons, then in BP servicing
petrol pumps. He later worked in Clarnico Murray, where he was appointed chief
engineer. He married Ellen Murphy on 14 Sep 1927 at St James' Church. Eileen was the
daughter of Thomas Murphy, a pork butcher and Bridget Keenan. Captain Patrick Dalton
died 2 Dec 1959 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
7 Alexander Patrick (Lally) Dalton born 17 Mar 1903 at 4 Usher Street was a commissionaire.
He married Elizabeth Peppard on 30 April 1946 at St Joseph's Church, Berkeley Road.
They lived at 27 A Upper Wellington Street in Dublin. Both Alex and Elizabeth worked as
commissionaires. Lally died 2 Jun 1961 and Elizabeth died 26 Mar 1976. They had
no issue and both are buried at Glasnevin (grave number VK 224.5 St Patricks) with
Elizabeth's parents Ann Catherine and Charles Peppard.
8 Elizabeth Dalton born 19 Jan 1905 at 35 Ushers Quay. She died from Spanish flu on
11 Nov 1918 at 23 Island Street aged 13 and is buried at Glasnevin (St Pauls ID 37 St
Pauls).
9 Thomas Christopher Dalton born 23 May 1907 at1 Ushers Street married Monica
Anne (Nancy) Trunk on 15 Apr 1939 Parish of St Pauls, Arran Quay and they had
Three children. Tommy was a fitter working at Clarnico's. Nancy died 23 Feb 1954 at
1 Connaught Street and was buried at Glasnevin ID 37 St Pauls. Tommy secondly married
Margaret Mary Trunk.
10 Arthur Oliver D'Alton born 19 Jul 1909 at 1 Ushers Street. He attained the rank of
Colonel in the Irish Army and was based at the Curragh Camp. He married Elizabeth
Byrne on 17 Jun 1938 at Rathgar RC Church and they had three children. Arthur died
19 Aug 1960 at St Brickin's late of 25 Beechwood park, Ranelagh.
9 Bridget Smyth born 12 Jun 1875 at 7 Hanover Quay.
10 John Smith born 11 Apr 1878 at 7 Hanover Quay. John died 9 Jun 1889 (Whitsunday) aged 16 at
35 Queen Terrace, his aunt Sarah Nolan the informant living at same address.
* James Nolan (brother of Elizabeth) of HM Customs died 2 Mar 1868 aged 53 at 7 Hanover Quay and
is buried at Glasnevin F 70 Garden.
Mary Nolan (mother of Elizabeth) died 22 Jun 1879 from consumption aged 97. She was the widow of
a flannel weaver and died at 4 Fair View Road, Irishtown (the home of her son in law). She is buried at
Glasnevin F 70 Garden. Glasnevin gives Eliza Nowlan of 2 Howard Place, Kingstown as the informant and
the death register give Bridget Grogregan (Geoghegan?) of 4 Fair View, Irishtown as the informant.
Bridget Nolan sister of Elizabeth married James Geoghegan. Their son Thomas Geoghegan baptised in
1855 drowned in Dublin Bay in 1880.
Charles? Bulger died 1 Aug 1872 or 1882 (unidentified connection).
William Cullen buried 1 Aug 1882 (a bachelor fisherman of 23 Pembroke Street, Irishtown - unidentified
connection).
