Adolphus Eugene Watson born circa 1800 Massachusetts son of Marston Watson and Lucy
Lee. He joined the United States Navy. He married Louisa Caroline Mathilde Stroughton on
23 Sep 1822 at Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts. Louisa was the daughter of Don Juan
Stroughton, his Catholic Majesty’s Consul in Boston. Louisa died 24 Oct 1832 in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania and is buried in Arlington, Middlesex, Massachusetts.
1 Louisa Stroughton Watson born circa 1823 married Augustus Clarke on 16 Aug 1842
in Massachusetts. They were living in Northampton, Hampshire in 1850 with their
two children.
2 Anna Watson born circa 1829 in Massachusetts living with her father in 1850.
3 Laura Watson born circa 1830 in Massachusetts living with her father in 1850. She
married John Burke on 13 Jun 1860 at St Stephens P E church, Pennsylvania. John was
the son of Rev John Burke and Mary Ann Guinness of Galway and the grandson of
Arthur Guinness and Olivia Whitmore. John was a merchant of Middle Abbey Street in
1866 and an agent for William Younger & Co, brewers of Edinburgh. Laura died
8 Jun 1866 at Avoca Avenue a week after giving birth and is buried at Stillorgan
churchyard.
1 Anita Louisa Burke born 6 Jan 1864 at Nahant, Avoca Avenue. She married
Emanuel Moor of New York on 9 Feb 1888 at St Jude’s, South Kensington.
Emanuel was a pianist, inventor, musical composer born in Hungary. They were
living at Farnham, Surrey in 1891. Anita died in Switzerland on 20 Sep 1922.
Emanuel secondly married Winifred Christie in 1923 and died 20 Oct 1931 at
Mont Pelerin, near Montreux.

3 Emeline Burke born 1 Jun 1866 at Nahant, Avoca Avenue died in June 1866.
John returned to America after the death of his wife. He married Elizabeth West
Watson on 4 Apr 1872. Elizabeth was the daughter of Rev J L Watson. John was
President of E & J Burke Company, a wholesale liquor business. John died aged 63 on
4 Aug 1892 at Llewellyn Park, Orange, New Jersey and left personal estate to the value of
220k in Ireland & England. Elizabeth died on 20 Oct 1924 in Orange, New Jersey aged
86.

married Robert Smith on 20 Feb 1868 at Monkstown Church. Witness’ John Burke and
Elizabeth Smith. Robert was a widower of Royal Terrace, Kingstown and the son of
Robert Smith.
5 Eugene Winslow Watson born 17 Feb 1843 Northampton, Hampshire County,
Massachusetts. He married Virginia Cruse circa 1865. He served aboard the USS
Monitor during its historic clash with the CSS Virginia (the Merrimac) and later co-authored
‘The Monitor and the Merrimac: Both Sides of the Story’. He attained the rank of rear
admiral. He died 11 Dec 1914 at Washington, District of Columbia.

3 Adolphus Eugene Watson born 9 Aug 1878 at Norfolk, City of Norfolk, Virginia. He
married Genevieve Gallagher. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American war, the
Philippines campaign and World War I. He attained the rank of rear admiral. He
served as commandant of the 4th naval district and the Philadelphia navy yard from
1940 until his retirement in 1942. He was presented with the Naval Cross by the
President of the United States. He died on 4 Oct 1949.
1 Priscilla Winslow Watson born 10 Aug 1914 married Alexander Coventry Liggett
on 9 Dec 1936.
Adolphus thirdly married Susan Lennox Ferguson on 25 Mar 1845. Susan was 20 years his junior.
Adolphus was a purser in the USN living in Philadelphia from 1850 to 1860. He died on 10 Jul 1876
in Portsmouth, Rockingham, New Hampshire.
