Croly family of 7 Merrion Square & Kilmacud House
Dr Henry Croly, JP Born 4 Aug 1807 at Cork, fourth son of John Croly of South Cregg and Margaret
Johnson, graduated from Edinburgh University, MD in 1832. He married Isabel Gray, eldest
daughter of William Wall Gray, JP of Rockbrook House, Queens County in 1833. Five of their sons
became doctors. Isabel died in 1891 and Henry died 31 July 1892 at Greenfield Rathfarnham
and was buried at Ballywalter Co Down.
1 Henry Croly, FRCS, MK, QCPI eldest son born circa 1836. As a student of the Royal College
of Surgeons he won the Purser medal from the Royal City of Dublin Hospital. He joined
the Royal Navy as a surgical dresser during the Crimean war and saw action at the Gulf of
Riga. On his return he qualified and acted as House Surgeon for the Royal City of Dublin
Hospital. He taught and had a private practice and was president of the RCSI 1890-1. He
married Anna Mary Chapman, eldest daughter of George Chapman of Rathmines on
19 Dec 1861 at St Peter's Church, Dublin. Over the years he had much of his work
published in medical journals. They moved from Harcourt Street to 7 Merrion Square in
1881. He became consulting Surgeon to Monkstown Hospital. He was a lover of horses
and a shower of Harness horses and often took on the role of Surgeon at racecourses.
Anna Mary died 26 Jul 1901 at Monkstown and was buried in Rathfarnham, Henry died at
Silveracre, Rathfarnham, the home of his brother Albert on 25 Aug 1903. According to his
obituary in the British Medical Journal, Henry Gray Croly was 'a brilliant surgeon, keen and
enthusiastic in his work, and never frightened by the magnitude of an operation.' The
house at 7 Merrion square was put up for sale after his death. His executor was Dr Isaac
W Usher of Dundrum.
1 Harriette Ethyl Croly born 28 Dec 1862 at Harcourt Street married Seymour
Anketell Jones of the 5th Royal Dublin fusiliers, son of Henry Anketell Jones of
Belleview, Killiney at St Mathias' Church on 21 Apr 1892. The lived in Springfield,
Waterford until 1896 when they moved to Buenos Ayres.
2 Isabella Croly born 30 Jan 1864 at 93 Harcourt Street unmarried and living with her
aunt in Crawfordsburn in 1904, died a spinster at Dartmouth Square on 9 Mar 1934.
3 Son Croly stillborn 19 Aug 1865.
4 Anna Maria Croly born 8 Sep 1866 at 27 Harcourt Street married Richard White of
Cloncallow, County Longford on 7 Mar 1892 at St Mathias' Church, Dublin.
5 Henry Croly, eldest son born 29 Oct 1867 at 27 Harcourt Street was appointed
surgeon of Mercer's Hospital and civil surgeon in charge of troops during the South
African war.

8 John Partington Gray Croly born 15 Nov 1876 at 27 Harcourt Street died 16 Mar 1880.

10 Meliora Croly, youngest daughter born 20 Oct 1872 at 27 Harcourt Street married
Wilfred Claud Stanley (Claud), youngest son of Joseph Wilson, DL of Clonmore
Stillorgan on 17 Nov 1898 at St Mathias' Church, Dublin. Claud died 6 Feb 1950 at
Shankill, Co. Dublin.

4 Thomas Desmond Lytton Wilson 2nd son born 05.05.1906 at Rath Cottage, Dundalk
married Hermione Wilson 2nd daughter of Herbert Wilson of Greenfield Park,
Donnybrook on 18.11.1940 at Cabinteely Church.
5 Claude Stanley Wilson born 16.05.1908 at Rath Cottage, Dundalk.
11 William Chapman Croly second son, born 2 Apr 1874 at 27 Harcourt Street. He was
a full back with Wanderers Rugby FC and joined the RAMC and went to Africa in charge
of the 3rd Dragoon Guards. He was invalided home from the front. He achieved the
rank of Captain and married Ella Mary Bourke Wright, daughter of the Rev Canon W
Bourke Wright, and granddaughter of Major Gen John Wray Mitchell of Castlestrange
Roscommon on 18 Mar 1903 at Athleaghue Parish Church. William died 28 Jun 1954
at Tralee.

12 Frank Croly, third son born 16 Nov 1875 at 27 Harcourt Street joined the Royal Fusiliers,
obtained a commission in the West African Frontier Force.
13 Arthur Croly, fourth and youngest son, born 1 Jan 1882 at 7 Merrion Square trained
with the 3rd King's Liverpool Regiment and obtained a commission as a university
Candidate.
2 Albert Croly, second son born circa 1838 became a doctor and took over his father's practice.
He married Charlotte Emily Todd of Silveracre Rathfarnham.
3 William Johnson Croly became a doctor and lived at Durrow, Queens County. He married
Charlotte Mildred Roe, daughter of William Roe of Queens County.
